DUTCH OVEN CAMP APPLE CRISP

D’juno?!? A Dutch oven is a thick walled cooking pot with a tight fitting lid created in the 1700s; Colonists and settlers coveted them because of their versatility and durability. For centuries cooks have used them to boil, bake, stew, fry, and roast meals for their friends and families. There are several different types of Dutch ovens for home and outdoor use. Here at camp we use Dutch ovens fitted with feet, lids with a rim and a wire handles. We place hot coals below the pot and on top of the lid which heat through for even cooking. When making baked goods, you get a nice crisp top and bottom, with a moist well cooked middle. This holiday season, impress your friends and family by cooking up an apple crisp in a Dutch oven!
